The deadline has passed, here are some post-deadline tips!

The November 15th 990 e-filing deadline has passed! If you filed your return, you can follow up on the status of your return with ExpressTaxExempt. If you missed the deadline, don’t worry! You can still file your return to ensure your organization remains in good standing with the IRS.

Re-transmitting Rejected Returns

If your return was rejected by the IRS for any reason, you can re-transmit it with ExpressTaxExempt for free.

ExpressTaxExempt will send you an email stating that your return has been rejected and highlight the specific error. To fix this, you can log into your account and click on the “rejected returns” button on your dashboard. From there, you can press “help me fix,” fix your error, and retransmit to the IRS.

Amending Your Form

If you accidentally excluded some information on your form or any of your organization’s information changes throughout the year, you can amend your return at any time. You can amend current or previous forms even if you filed with another e-filing provider.

You can indicate that your form is amended by checking the “amended return” box in item B of the heading on page 1 of your form. You must also file a Schedule O providing a reason why any parts or schedules were amended. The Schedule will auto-generate onto your form when you check the “amended return” box.

Checking your return status

You may wonder when the IRS will accept your return. Just log into your ExpressTaxExempt account and click on the “tax returns” page from your dashboard. You will be able to see your return status.

Clients can also opt-in to filing status updates via email. You can be notified when your form is transmitted, when the IRS is processing the return, and when your form has been accepted or rejected. Typically, returns are processed and approved within 24-48 hours, but delays may occur around big deadline days.

If you missed your return deadline

Sometimes things happen. If you missed your deadline, you’ll want to file as soon as possible to avoid further penalties or risking your organization’s tax-exempt status. Failing to file your 990 series return for three years in a row may result in an automatic revocation of your tax-exempt status. Remember, filing a late form is much better than not filing a return at all!

Whether you successfully filed your form or missed your deadline, ExpressTaxExempt is here to support you every step of the way. Our process is not finished when you transmit your form, so don’t hesitate to reach out to customer support with any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
