How To Extend Your Deadline with Form 8868
The May 15th deadline is almost here and it takes a bit of time to prepare Form 990 before it can be transmitted to the IRS. They don’t call it the Long Form for nothing. You can e-file Form 8868 – Exempt Organization Tax Extension – for an automatic 3 month extension of time to file.  And if the initial 3 months is not enough, you can apply for an additional 3 months with Part II of Form 8868. Here’s the breakdown of Form 8868:

  • Part I: Automatic 3 Month Extension of Time – this is the initial extension that when e-filed will provide you with an automatic 3 month extension. You don’t need a reason or any special documentation for this extension, you simply e-file and you’re done.
  • Part II: Additional (non-automatic) 3 Month Extension of Time – you can only e-file Part II if you have e-file Part I. This extension is not automatic and is up to the IRS to decide.
To e-file Form 8868 all you will need is your business/organization name, address, EIN/FEIN, and estimated amount of tax owed to the IRS (if any).
