How To E-file Your Exempt Organization Return
Before you get to e-filing with Express990, it really helps to know exactly which form from the 990 series to file. Express990.com support e-filing of Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N.
Form 990 (long form)
This bad boy is the largest 990 form in the series. It is for organizations with gross receipts greater than or equal to $200,000 or total assets greater than or equal to $500,000 at the end of the tax year. This one takes some time to complete so if you haven’t e-filed it yet, go ahead and e-file tax extension Form 8868 and automatically receive 3 additional months to e-file. Form 990-EZ
This form is a smidgen shorter than Form 990. It is for organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 or total assets of less than $500,000. Like Form 990, the 990-EZ also takes some time to complete because of all the information that has to be entered. If you can’t make the deadline, be sure to e-file Form 8868 to extend your deadline 3 months.
Form 990-N
This form is very short and only takes a few minutes to e-file. It is for smaller organizations with $50,000 or less in gross receipts for the year. The deadline can not be extended for this form because it honestly only takes a second to complete if you have all the information ready beforehand. Form 8868 is an IRS Tax Extension to extend the deadline for Exempt Organization Income Tax Returns. It is divided into two separate parts. Part I will automatically extend your deadline for 3 months when e-filed. If you need more time than the initial deadline provides, then you can also e-file Part II for an additional 3 months.
