June 15, 2021 Form 990 deadline

Your organization probably has a lot going on for the month of June. If filing Form 990 by June 15th is on that list, here is everything you need to know. It’s a good time to do a review on your 990 series forms, check your deadline requirements, and decide whether filing extension Form 8868 is right for you.

Form 990

Nonprofits and tax-exempt organizations are required to e-file Form 990 every year to give the IRS a record of their finances. This form requires information about an organization’s gross receipts, programs, activities, and governing officers. In addition to being provided to the IRS, this information is also released to the public and made available online.

Nonprofits can meet their IRS Form 990 deadlines by filing Form 990, 990-PF, 990-EZ, or 990-N, depending on their size, function, and gross receipts. Click here to check your requirements with our free Form 990 finder.

Form 990 is one of the most important deadlines for the nonprofit sector. Missing the Form 990 deadline can result in IRS penalties for your nonprofit. If an organization fails to file for three years in a row, the IRS can also automatically revoke their tax-exempt status.

Who Needs to File Form 990 by June 15th?

The Form 990 deadline is the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of an organization’s tax period. That may seem complicated, but for organizations whose tax year ended on January 31, 2021, the Form 990 due date is June 15, 2021.

For nonprofits who filed an extension for their December 15, 2020 Form 990 deadline, the extended deadline is June 15, 2021.

Should You Request An Extension?

There is a lot of information to report on Form 990, so it is understandable if you need more time to file. There are a variety of reasons your organization may need a little extra time to meet your Form 990 due date, and if you do, there’s no reason not to request an extension. The good news is, the IRS doesn’t require you to provide an explanation.

Nonprofits can request an extension by filing Form 8868. When you file Form 8868, your organization can receive an automatic extension of up to six months. If you file Form 8868 for your June 15, 2021 deadline, your new due date will be December 15, 2021.

It’s important to remember that nonprofits can only file one extension per year. If you already filed Form 8868, you will not have the option to do so again. That means if this month marks your extended deadline, you will need to meet your due date by June 15, 2021.
