Exempt Organization May Tax Deadline


Before we get into the fun stuff, let’s take a moment to enjoy the fact that it’s May! Summer is almost here, and even though I live in the South, summer is one of my favorite seasons. Warmer weather means outdoor concerts and that is my jam. Okay, I’ll put on my serious hat for a minute (slightly serious) to discuss a major deadline in May for Exempt Organizations.

A majority of Tax Exempt Organizations follow a calendar year for filing their taxes. This means that your Exempt Organization Income Tax Return is due May 15th. 990 Forms Supported by Express990

Form 990
Available Soon. Form 990 is an information return used by organizations with gross receipts greater than or equal to $200,000 or total assets of greater than or equal to $500,000. This form takes a bit of time to complete because of the many parts you have to finish before you can transmit to the IRS. Paper filing this form was not an easy task and if you made a mistake…we’re not even going to get into that nightmare. Form 990-EZ
Form 990-EZ is used by organizations with gross receipts of less than $200,000 or total assets of less than $500,000. This form contains many different schedules that must be completed before transmitting to the IRS. Form 990-N (e-Postcard)
Form 990-N is used by smaller exempt organizations with $50,000 or less a year in gross receipts. This form is the smallest in the 990 Series and only takes a few minutes to complete. It is like a very condensed form of the 990. Form 8868 To Extend Your Deadline
If you need more time to file your 990 form (990-N deadline cannot be extended) you can easily e-file Form 8868 with Expres990.com. This form comes in two parts so you can e-file for an automatic 3 month extension and if you need more time then you can e-file Part II or an additional 3 months to file. You only need a few tid bits of information to e-file Form 8868 and it can be completed and transmitted to the IRS in minutes.
