It’s that time of year yet again; that all-so-magical or not-so-magical time period each year where we all traditionally prepare our previous year’s financial statements and reports. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we're talking about the annual tax season. And, whether you’ve been anticipating it or were caught by surprise, deadlines are approaching and the IRS is waiting. For tax exempt organizations, no matter what tax-exempt form you need to file, Express990 supports all Form 990 tax returns and extensions.

Form 990-N (e-Postcard)
Who Needs To File: Small tax exempt organizations and charities that typically gross $50,000 or less a year must file the required Form 990-N (e-Postcard) to IRS every year; the only exceptions are organizations that are included in a group return; churches and their integrated auxiliaries, conventions, or associations of churches; or, organizations that need to file a different return.

The Form: There is no paper form, filing is all done online, and there are no schedules to complete.
Only eight pieces of information are needed to file a 990-N (e-Postcard):
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Tax Year
  • Legal Name & Address
  • Different Names Used By The Organization, if applicable
  • Website, if applicable
  • Name & Address Of A Principal Officer

Who Needs To File: Tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 and total assets less than $500,000 per year are required to file a Form 990-EZ.

The Form: Schedules are very important sections within a 990-EZ that detail information proving tax exempt status for an organization; each schedule is designed for certain activities.

With Express990: E-File your Form 990-EZ only for the current tax year and the most previous tax year.

Form 990 Long

Extension Form 8868

What Happens If I Miss The 990 Filing Deadline?

So, the “15th day of the 5th month” deadline is quickly approaching. You realize that you won’t be able to file your Form 990 on time and decide to submit an Extension Form 8868 for a 3-month extension; however, those three months have come and gone and, for whatever reason, you still haven’t filed your Form 990. Before you know it, you miss the filing deadline and are probably wondering, “What happens now?”

If the filing deadline has passed, keep in mind that you can still file a Form 990. And, you very well should because, if not, you could incur a daily penalty charge for each day your return is late.

Late Filings, Penalties, & Fees
If your organization’s gross receipts are less than $1,000,000 for the tax year and you file a Form 990 or an Extension Form 8868 after the due date, without any cause for filing late, the IRS will charge a penalty of $20 per day for each day your return was late.
The maximum penalty won’t exceed $10,000 or 5% of your organization’s gross receipts, whichever amount is less.
If your organization’s gross receipts are greater than $1,000,000, the charge penalty will be $100 per day with a maximum of $50,000. Even with the penalty charges, if you fail to file a Form 990 for three consecutive years, your organization will lose its tax exempt status.

It is very important to file the appropriate Form 990 on time. If you even slightly think you may have to file late, submit an Extension Form 8868 by the original deadline for a 3-month extension and to avoid penalty charges. Express990 supports each of these forms and makes filing quick and simple. Sign-up and get started with Express990.com.

How To | E-File & Make The Exempt Organization Tax Deadline

Today is the Exempt Organization Income Tax Deadline! If you have been procrastinating e-filing your Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N, I have the best tips and tricks to transmit your return on time with Express990.com. I even have the scoop on how to extend your deadline for those longer forms so you can have an additional 3 months to file. Let the sharing of knowledge begin...

How To E-file Your Exempt Organization Return
Before you get to e-filing with Express990, it really helps to know exactly which form from the 990 series to file. Express990.com support e-filing of Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N.

Form 990 (long form)
This bad boy is the largest 990 form in the series. It is for organizations with gross receipts greater than or equal to $200,000 or total assets greater than or equal to $500,000 at the end of the tax year. This one takes some time to complete so if you haven't e-filed it yet, go ahead and e-file tax extension Form 8868 and automatically receive 3 additional months to e-file. More information on Form 8868 is below.

Form 990-EZ
This form is a smidgen shorter than Form 990. It is for organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 or total assets of less than $500,000. Like Form 990, the 990-EZ also takes some time to complete because of all the information that has to be entered. If you can't make the deadline, be sure to e-file Form 8868 to extend your deadline 3 months.

Form 990-N
This form is very short and only takes a few minutes to e-file. It is for smaller organizations with $50,000 or less in gross receipts for the year. The deadline can not be extended for this form because it honestly only takes a second to complete if you have all the information ready beforehand. Express990 made e-filing this form even easier with its Express990 App that allows you to e-file from any location. It is free to download and available for Apple and Android devices. Oh, and did I mention that e-filing Form 990-N for the current tax year is FREE! Just can't beat that price.

How To Extend Your Deadline with Form 8868
Form 8868 is an IRS Tax Extension to extend the deadline for Exempt Organization Income Tax Returns. It is divided into two separate parts. Part I will automatically extend your deadline for 3 months when e-filed. If you need more time than the initial deadline provides, then you can also e-file Part II for an additional 3 months.

If you have any questions about e-filing Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-N or Form 8868, contact the Express990 support team via phone: 704-839-2321 or email: support@expresstaxexempt.com.

Best & Worst Ways to E-file Form 990

The May 15th tax deadline for nonprofit and tax exempt organizations is coming up quick. You may have been playing the procrastination game up until this point, but now it is time to e-file your form. Express990.com provides e-filing of Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N that will help you break your procrastination habit and e-file well before the deadline. Now let's mix fun and taxes and go over the best and worst ways to e-filing your Form 990.

The Best
You probably already know I am going to say that Express990.com is the best way to transmit your 990 form to the IRS, and you would be correct my friend. It is the best solution available, but there is a bit more to it.

Form 990
Once you have organized all the information you need to e-file Form 990, our system will walk you through the entire process. If you are used to paper filing Form 990, oh honey your life is about to change for the better. First, you will be doing good for the planet because e-filing requires no paper. Second, you will save yourself from headache and stress because you don't have to worry about ink smudging, information being entered in wrong and you can't fix it, you don't have papers all over the place, and I'm telling you - less paper saves lives. I really could go on and on about all the benefits of e-filing with Express990.com, but we have other forms to cover.

Form 990-EZ
The best way to e-file your 990-EZ is with Express990.com. With these long forms, it is easy to miss sections but e-filing provides you with the advantage of highlighting every section that needs to be completed. Our system walks you through each and every step so you don't miss anything and that makes the entire process so much easier. Express990 also provides great education on every schedule for the 990-EZ. If you do get stuck or have a question, call our amazing customer support team.

Form 990-N
If you need to e-file your 990-N in a few minutes and get back to work, Express990 provides a few options for you. You can quickly e-file on your computer or using our Express990 App. There's an app for everything these days. The entire process for e-filing your 990-N is quick and easy. We provide helpful prompts to guide you the entire way. The best part is that it is completely FREE to e-file for the current tax year. Get started now at Express990.com or download the Express990 App on your Apple or Android device.

The Worst
Honestly, the worst way to e-file your 990 is to not do it at all. If you miss filing your 990 (any form from the series) for 3 consecutive years, you will lose your tax exempt status. Then it's a big mess that has to be worked out with the IRS directly and nobody wants to go through that.

Another worst way is to not contact the Express990 Support Team if you have a question. We don't want you to just guess, guessing causes returns to be rejected. Contact the Express990 Support team with any question you may have via phone: 704-839-2321 or email: support@expresstaxexempt.com.

Tax Exempt May Deadline | Form 990-N

When it comes to the world of taxes, few things are as time consuming as the Form 990. Thankfully the IRS has created a shorter version for small tax exempt organizations that can be e-filed in minutes with Express990.com. There is even an app you can use to e-file your 990-N from any location.

So What Exactly Is The 990-N (e-Postcard)?
Form 990-N is specifically for those tax-exempt organizations which have annual gross receipts of less than $50,000. Like all other 990 forms, it is due on the 15th day of the 5th month after the organization's accounting year is over. If your organization follows a calendar tax year, then your deadline will be May 15th. You only need to file this form once a year. If you don't file your 990-N for 3 consecutive years, you may lose your exempt status with the IRS.

What Information Is Required On Form 990-N?
Some of the required information I'm about list is a little redundant, but I figure more information is better than not enough, right? Glad you agree (lulz). Here is the required information you will need to e-file Form 990-N:
- Employer Identification Number (EIN)
- Your organization's tax year
- The organization's legal name and address (what the IRS has on file)
- All of the "Doing Business As" names your organization operates under
- The names and address of your principal officers
- The organization's website (if any)
- A confirmation of $50,000 or less of gross receipts throughout the year
- A statement if the organization is going out of business

How Much Is It To E-file?
It is free to e-file your 990-N for the current tax year. Seriously, it costs nothing at all.

How Do I E-file Form 990-N?
You actually have a few options when it comes to e-filing your 990-N with Express990.com. If a computer is regularly in your reach, you can easily e-file using Express990.com.

Or you can e-file on your mobile device using the Express990 App. We know you're busy ( and busy probably doesn't even begin to explain it) and we want you to keep your tax-exempt status so we built you an amazing app to get your 990-N filing done in minutes. The 990-N App is available for Apple & Android devices.

If you have any questions when e-filing your 990N with Express990, contact the Express990 Support Team via phone: 704-839-2321 or email: support@expresstaxexempt.com
